Day 1: Registration + Understanding the Migration Issues of Southern EU Countries

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I expected and hope to gain a better understanding of the many different issues that southern EU countries are facing in terms of migrants that are coming over to southern EU countries and hopefully ways we can better deal with these issues.

I also expected to network and make new friends.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

Both presentations were very interesting. I have learnt a lot about how Italy works with newly arrived migrants (Alessandra’s presentation and about current issues the southern EU countries are facing.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

It would be useful to keep an eye on participants’ presentations whether they are staying within 5 minutes to prevent from running late/overtime with the rest of the programme.

I t was challenging at times to stay focused during long periods of Italian spoken (Alessandra’s presentation). It would be good to have shorter chunks of presentation interpreted into English. Also, having Alessandra’s presentation slides in English should help with staying focused.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

Questions and answers after the presentations. Best way of understanding the information being presented.

Trip to Lamezia City Centre and dinner.

Day 2: FULL DAY VISIT to Riace with Mayor DOMENICO LUCANO

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I expect to see first-hand the positive contribution that migrants have had on a city that was abandoned by people and hopefully to meet some of these people and also local residents and to see what their opinion is.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

I have meant that it is possible to successfully integrate migrant communities with the locals and vice-versa.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

It would be great to have questions and answers time with the major.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

Interacting with locals including migrants

Visiting the workshops

Eating local food

Day 3: History of Immigration in Southern Europe and Perceptions

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

It would be enlightening to see the history of migration to southern Europe. It would also be very interesting to see if migration is an old issue in southern Europe and not just a recent issue. It would also be interesting to see perception of people before and their attitudes towards migrants and to cross reference that against out time.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

Today’s presentation confirmed my idea about migration.

People have always migrated so migration isn’t an issue of our times

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

More opportunities to have conversations between presenters and participants and less presentation content time

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

          Interesting topics of presentation

Trip to Tropea with the organizers

Good balance of today’s programme: morning presentation and afternoon trip to Tropea

Day 4:  How are different cultures and religions accommodated in Europe?

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I hope to gain a better understanding  on how religions and cultures are accommodated in Europe and to see how they could be better accommodated and to see where we are succeeding and failing with respect this topic.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

Today’s presentation was excellent – cases studies helped me to understand better the topic of radicalisation and how to prevent it

Religion is a difficult and sensitive subject to talk about. There must be opportunities created in order to understand cultural aspects as well as religious ones in order to fully enable integration for hosting and migrant communities.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

Mental health and refugees presentation would benefit from case studies/examples as well as question and answer time

Group discussion: there were many individuals who have a lot of experience of working with refugees experiencing ill mental health.

Their expertise and work experience might benefit sharing good practise examples.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

Today’s presentation was excellent: attention grasping content with plenty of case studies.

Day 5: Migrant Pathway Options (2) + Afternoon visit to a local “centro di accoglienza”

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

How migrants can be better integrated into a hosting country.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

To remember about the fact that each of us has an identity that is influenced by our upbringing culture/ traditions.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

It was a great session with hands – on activities.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

Hands- on activities to explore the topic of today’s presentation.

Day 6:  Workshop at a migrant centre in Reggio Calabria – FULL day visit padre MIOLI

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I don’t know

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

I was shocked with what I saw at the port. Also heartbroken that we live in a world where these are people who have be escaping terrible conditions in their home countries

I have learned that poorer counties like Italy seem to be doing more than the richer countries like England.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

I would love to be practically involved in the visit to the port, e.g. loving food, clothes. I felt very uncomfortable to be looking at the newly arriving migrants and doing things.

I think that it would be nicer to invite the migrants’ communities to join the participants for lunch instead of the participants going to the migrants accommodation.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

Seafood lunch
