Day 1: Registration + Understanding the Migration Issues of Southern EU Countries

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I expect to learn more about the study visit programme and other participants.

Besides that, I hope to hear something about Italian current affairs regarding migration issue and some useful solutions.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

Apart from information about the programme and participants of study visit, I have received a better understanding of the terminology. Furthermore, I have gained a better understanding of the main regulations and programmes financed by the Italian government.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

I would suggest a translation of the PowerPoint Presentations, and if a possible electronic version of all presentations.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

Aleksandra’s presentation has left a great impression on me because of her passion and realistic approach.

Day 2: FULL DAY VISIT to Riace with Mayor DOMENICO LUCANO

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I expect to see example of good practice on:

–    How migrants can contribute to development of local community;

–    How to motivate locals to accept migrants;

–    How does coexistence look like?

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

I had an opportunity to learn more about one of the best examples of good practice. This has helped me to form a general impression about Riace and how everything has started and how does it work in reality.

We also have an opportunity to receive information about some statistical data about migration on the South Italy study case.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

It would be good to spend more time with the mayor or some of his associates. I was not able to communicate with migrants as I have wished due to the language barrier. Maybe group conversation with some of “new” citizens from Riache with translation can be good compensation.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

The most impressive things from today are Riace’s Mayor passion and atmosphere in the community.

I was also enjoying the discussion with peers during the afternoon presentation about South Italy study case.

Day 3: History of Immigration in Southern Europe and Perceptions

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I expect to learn about history on immigration in Southern Europe. I am also looking forward to comparative analyses of the recent migration data in Italy with other EU countries such as Spain, Turkey and Greece and Britain.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

I have received an overview of the migrant’s issue in Europe and have a better understanding of the multi-layered problem.

I also have gained information about history on migrant immigration in Southern Europe and how are migrants often perceived.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

I would appreciate receiving translated PowerPoint Presentations in electronic format.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

The critical approach of presenters was the most impressive thing during today’s presentations.

Day 4:  How are different cultures and religions accommodated in Europe?

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I expect to learn more about social exclusion and prevention of violent radicalisation methods that have helped to integrate minorities across Europe.  I also expect to hear about mental issues migrants and refugees face when they reach new country and about the strategies to overcome them. I am looking forward to the discussion with priest or imam about tolerance/intolerance.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

I have gained more information about some of the best practice models for the prevention of extremism and radicalisation.

I have also learnt how the social exclusion and the lack of integration cause mental distress within migrants, and practical recommendations to help migrants with inclusion.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

It would be good to have a hard copy of power point presentation during the presentation.

Please send us all presentations in electronic format.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

The biggest impression for me was the examples given during the presentation on social exclusion and prevention of violent radicalisation methods.

Day 5: Migrant Pathway Options (2) + Afternoon visit to a local “Centro di Accoglienza”

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I expect to receive more information about educational activities as well as recognition of prior learning and experience of the migrants, trough presentation, but also trough visit to the local migrant’s centre.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

I have a deeper understanding of differences between people on the individual and cultural level.

I am introduced to one good example of integration method trough providing minors migrants with a house for accommodation.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

I am sorry because we haven’t had time to hear more about education activities and to visit the local centre. Maybe it would be better to organise workshop about identity and culture at the beginning of the study visit, as a part of participants’ introduction, and to leave more space for models of good practices for language learning, cultural integration and practical skills training by existing organisations.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

Visit of the accommodation for minors was the best part of the day.

Day 6:  Workshop at a migrant centre in Reggio Calabria – FULL day visit padre MIOLI

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I expect to practically learn more about developing social, civic and intercultural competencies for working with migrants.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

We had an opportunity to visit Diocesan Counselling Centre for migrants “Giovanni Battista Scalabrini” and to see different activities organised by them. I was especially fascinated with a number of volunteers involved in their activities. The strongest impression was in the harbour where we had an opportunity to see a group of the migrants who have just arrived in Italy.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

Experience in the harbour was incredibly powerful, but I would prefer if I had had an opportunity to contribute in some way, at least in a food serving.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

I was especially excited to visit the local migrant’s centres and meet migrants, volunteers and professionals.

Day 7:  The importance of promoting European values and tackle social exclusion

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN FROM THIS SESSION

I expect to gain practical information about the importance of promoting common European values, intercultural dialogue and tackle social exclusion.

I also hope to receive some recommendation about what we can all do to help migrants in our country, based on Italian experience.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

I have received information about activities and examples of best practice linked with the development of social, cultural and professional skills in Southern Italy, with a focus on Sicily.

I have also gained additional knowledge about social inclusion, intercultural dialogue and promoting European values.

Finally, we have received prefect closure trough excellent presentation about what actually happens when migrant start they journey from their countries to Italy.

   SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

I would be really thankful if you could send us Ivan’s presentation from the last day, but also one he has shared with teachers on the following day.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST

The presentation of Ivan Ciaramida was the perfect choice for the summarisation of complete study visit.
